Automated energy trading

If you have a contract with dynamic tariffs, your Victron ESS can trade energy for you. The system checks current rates every quarter-hour or hour and buys electricity when prices are low. Any excess - including power from your solar panels - is sold back at the highest price. So you're not just saving money, you're becoming less dependent on your energy supplier too.

Low rates, even in winter

Your Victron system automatically selects the most cost-effective energy source: solar, battery, or grid. Its smart Dynamic ESS algorithms combine current prices, solar generation, and expected consumption to keep your energy costs low around the clock. Even in winter, by buying during off-peak hours.

Stay powered during outages

When there's a blackout, you won't even notice. Your Victron ESS switches to battery power instantly, so you can carry on with whatever you're doing. Your existing solar panels keep working too, unlike grid-tied systems that shut down during power cuts.

No subscriptions or contracts

Choosing a Victron ESS means choosing freedom. We don't do mandatory contracts or subscriptions, and there's no lock-in to a single energy supplier. Our software is free to use, now and in the future.

Avoids grid feed-in charges

With a Victron ESS, your solar power is stored in the system's battery. By using your generated energy later - in the evening or during poor weather - you reduce reliance on your energy supplier and avoid feed-in charges.

Peak shaving: more power without upgrading your connection

Even with a standard connection, a Victron ESS lets you run heavy-duty appliances like a heat pump, EV charger and induction hob simultaneously. The peak shaving function reduces demand spikes by drawing on the battery temporarily, avoiding the cost of upgrading to a higher-capacity connection.

Dynamic ESS

An energy storage system that makes the right decisions by itself

Dynamic ESS intelligently manages your entire installation, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sophisticated algorithms charge and discharge the battery based on expected power consumption, solar generation at your location, and current energy prices, so you get the most from a dynamic energy tariff. The result: lower costs, maximum solar usage, less grid dependence, and the option to automatically sell excess power. Dynamic ESS is included free with every Victron ESS system.

Peak shaving

More power from your existing connection

Do you want to run your heat pump, charge your EV and use your induction hob all at once? With peak shaving, you can - without constantly tripping the breaker. Demand spikes are automatically smoothed out by drawing on the ESS battery. This means you get more power from your existing connection and, in some cases, can even opt for a lower-capacity - and therefore cheaper - connection.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ESS?

An ESS (Energy Storage System) is an energy system that intelligently connects your solar panels, PV inverter and mains connection to a battery. It stores excess solar power during the day so you can use that energy later when the sun isn't shining - in the evening or during poor weather, for example. This way, you make optimal use of your self-generated solar energy and avoid grid feed-in charges.

Can I combine Victron ESS with my existing solar panels?

Yes, Victron ESS integrates effortlessly with existing installations. The modular system adapts to any configuration, whether you already have solar panels, a heat pump or other equipment.

What's the difference between a single-phase and a three-phase connection?

A single-phase connection is standard in many older or smaller homes and provides enough power for lighting and regular appliances. A three-phase connection is more common in new-build homes or larger properties and is suitable for heavy-duty appliances like induction hobs, charge points or heat pumps. You can see the difference in your fuse box: one main circuit breaker means single-phase, three main circuit breakers means three-phase.

Does a Victron ESS only work with a three-phase connection?

No, a Victron ESS works perfectly fine with a single-phase connection - it manages your consumption, storage and grid feed-in on that single phase. If you have a three-phase connection, you can choose to install an inverter on all three phases or just on one. With a single inverter, your ESS can still balance the total consumption across all three phases by feeding power back from phase 1 to keep your meter as close to zero as possible.

Besides ESS, I also hear the term EMS - what does that mean?

EMS stands for Energy Management System. It's a widely used term for the ESS software that manages and optimises energy consumption and storage. The EMS developed for your Victron ESS is flexible and can also intelligently control various appliances, so they're used at the most favourable times. This helps you save even more.

Can a Victron ESS buy and sell energy automatically?

Yes, with the Dynamic ESS function in 'Trade Mode', the system can trade energy automatically. It buys power when rates are low and sells excess energy (including your self-generated solar energy) back when prices are higher. Depending on your energy consumption and market prices, this can save you quite a lot of money each year. Note: you'll need a dynamic energy contract for this.

What if I want to sell energy but prioritise my own consumption?

For that, the Dynamic ESS function has a 'Green Mode'. This covers your own consumption first, then charges the battery, and only sells excess energy as a last step.

What is a dynamic energy contract?

With a dynamic energy contract, electricity rates are directly linked to current prices on the energy exchange. You pay only a small purchasing fee on top of the standing charges, without the extra cost for price certainty you'd have with a fixed-rate contract. With a dynamic contract, you can use Dynamic ESS: your system automatically buys power when prices are low and sells what you don't use when prices are high.

What happens during a power cut if you have an ESS?

The system switches to the battery instantly, so everything keeps working. You can even temporarily reserve extra backup capacity if you're expecting problems, such as during severe weather or planned network maintenance.

Do I need a large battery straight away?

No, you can start small and even begin without a battery if you're still planning to install solar panels. In that case, you'd choose the Victron Multi RS: an inverter and charger in one. This converts your solar energy to mains power and, as soon as you add a battery, it also works as a charger. As a rule of thumb, you can aim for battery capacity of roughly 70% of your solar panel capacity. Your installer will be happy to help you make the best choice.

Is a Victron ESS easy to expand?

Yes. In fact, it's specifically designed to grow with your energy needs. Not only because all Victron products are easy to combine with each other, but also because the system works with equipment from other brands. Think of AC-PV inverters for solar panels and batteries, for example.

Are there extra costs for the smart features?

No, all smart features such as Dynamic ESS, monitoring via the VRM app and automatic optimisation are included as standard with no extra costs or subscriptions.

Can the system handle peaks in my electricity use?

Yes, even with a standard mains connection, heavy appliances like heat pumps and EV chargers can run simultaneously. The system automatically steps in when more power is needed.

I'm not familiar with Victron Energy. Is it a reliable brand?

Absolutely. Victron Energy is a Dutch family business that has been leading the way in energy systems since 1975. We have millions of customers worldwide and our equipment operates in the most remote areas where you're completely self-reliant. Professionals trust Victron in extreme conditions: our systems can be found in rescue boats, hospitals use our emergency power solutions for backup, and we're the global market leader in energy systems for ambulances.

Is a Victron ESS a safe system?

It definitely is. Many of our customers must be able to rely on their Victron equipment in the most extreme conditions, and everything is built and tested accordingly. So even though an ESS will never be used at sea or in a remote mountain region, the components meet the highest safety standards, including protection against short circuits and overheating. We also work exclusively with experienced and trained installers who only recommend lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries, currently the most stable technology. Your data is protected too: as a Dutch company, we write our own software and use European cloud services, with no unclear privacy rules. Your data remains yours.
